Backup Data Important Preparation for a Disaster

I've been enjoying the beautiful cool weather here in South Florida and today was no exception. In actuality, it was warmer today than it has been. I don't think there are going to be many more cold days left. On top of that, now that we're in the new year, we're getting closer to the 2009 Hurricane Season. I'm sure you're not looking forward to seeing what this year brings on that note.

However, if you are thinking about hurricane preparation, that's not a bad thing at all. We have to be prepared for a disaster the best way possible even if, when it happens, you still feel the shock. So, one of the things you can start thinking about is backing up your computer data. In this day and age, you can save lots of data onto backup instruments like
micro sd disks and flash drives.

I actually just found out how to work a micro sd into my cell phone, LOL! It was so cool. Now I can get my pictures out of my camera and onto my desktop. I was so excited. Anyway, it's amazing how small these things are and how much data they can carry. So, you can backup your very important information and safely keep it in your wallet so that while you may feel the hurt of losing your computer(s) in a disaster, you won't lose your life.

Vacationing Spots in South Florida

Now that the New Year celebrations have come and gone, people are starting to think about when they will be taking their next vacation. Central and South Florida are both known for their tourism industry. One of the things that has become extremely popular down here is time sharing. In fact, I've stayed in several time shares over the course of the last five years or so since my in-laws purchased into one of those Westgate packages.

I have to tell you that for the most part, I've enjoyed my stays at all of the resorts. They do seem to try to treat their customers/owners special and make you feel at home. On the other hand, I still wonder how people have continued to invest in property in Florida while it is such a hurricane prone State. I can't say anything though since I myself moved down here the year right after there were four hurricanes that his the State. I guess I like to live on the edge. :-)

Armor Screen Wind and High Impact Protection

OK, so I checked out armor screen and spoke to my husband about it. It looks like it might be pretty economical. I saw where you could get a free estimate, so I'll be calling in the next month or so. Perhaps this year, I will be more prepared than ever. I'm hoping to have this in place if it's not too expensive.

I guess I can forget about getting a new tv stand, LOL! I'm going to have to use my tax refund, that is if I get a refund, for this new armor screen protection. I was hoping to see some video of the effectiveness of it, but it looks like the videos have all been taken down. I wonder if there are any videos on YouTube.

Rest and Relaxation out of Hurricane Season

Winter in Florida is one of the best times of the year. There is usually a cool light breeze and not so humid air. The temperature ranges from the low 60s to the high 70s most days. It's perfect. The best part of this year is that there are no hurricane threats to think about. This is the part of the year where you can think of more basic necessities like car insurance, painting your house, buying new dishes and maybe even new furniture. OK, those last two are probably not really necessities, but you know stuff like that.

I say this every year, but I'd love to find some money to invest in getting shutters for my home. I can't even tell you how badly my husband worries when a storm is coming just because he doesn't have the proper protection. We constantly think about getting plywood, but haven't even invested in that. It's the cheap way to fly, but in these hard economic times, it's really all we can afford, you know?

Anyway, you don't have many months to relax now that hurricane season is gone. If you are going to invest in shutters and things that take time to order and measure and buy and install, now is a good time to do that. I'm going to look into Armor Screen. I'll let you know how it goes.

My husband had almost a four day weekend and, although we had so many things to do, we just lounged around. I was able to read two books and rested a little. However, today I finally got to do some of the things I was suppose to do, like finish up some gifts that had to do with a business promotion I've been working on. I was also able to organize a bit and get my numbers together for next month's taxes. That always takes me a while.

I remember it being so much easier when I worked outside the home for someone else. I didn't have to worry about anything after work except going back to work each day. I worked as an interpreter for the deaf. There were also some students in the class that suffered from cerebral palsy, but I didn't have to work with them. They were taken care of by a colleague of mine.

Anyway, the point is that I use to really enjoy my vacation days. Now that I work at home, although I do have more time and I'm flexible as far as how I spend my time, I just can't get myself to relax. I'm always working on the business. Maybe that's definitely something I should change in 2009.

Hmmmm...one more New Year's Resolution.

New Years Resolutions and Old Years Accomplishments

WOW! It's been so long since I posted on here. What can I tell you about hurricanes. We've been out of hurricane season for almost a month now and let me tell you! What a relief it is not to be worried about some crazy storm coming our way. I love that! It's also very nice to report that here in South Florida, we've been experiencing consistent cool weather days. It's not unbearable by any means.

So, weather aside, aren't you looking forward to 2009? I am. I don't want June 1st to get here anytime soon, but I have always liked the idea of a new start. Every year I work on my inside and outside image. I try to diet and I try to be more positive. I actually came across a good diet pill review website that you might benefit from here: Leptovox. Anyway, throughout the year, situations come up that take away my peace and my motivation to diet. When I'm stressed I do tend to eat, so all my work in the beginning of the year seems to go downhill.

This year though, I'm proud to say that I did do one thing. I lost some weight. I still have more weight to lose and am looking forward to the coming year so I can have that sense of motivation again. I guess I don't have to wait two more weeks, but I have given myself the excuse so that I can continue to eat whatever I want, LOL! Oh, and so I can be a little lazy.

Next year at the end of the year, I hope to be able to report more good news. How's your year been?

Another Nice Day!

Today, after three days of waking up to rain and cold weather, it's turned into a beautiful day. This morning we were in the 40s which is rare for South Florida, but the sun quickly burned up the cold and now it's got to be in the low 70s again. The sun is out and there's a light breeze. It's just beautiful.

I am still wearing a sweater though, so I don't think it's time to kick out the outdoor bar stools just yet. Give it a few more weeks and we'll be back to warm weather before you know it. I'm in no rush though.

Baby It's Cold Outside!

Over the last two days or so, we've had some surprising weather. It's been rainy and then cool and then a little warmer and then cool again. I am sure that is why my children and husband have colds. They've been passing them around to each other. I think I'm the only one who hasn't had a really bad cold out of all of us. I was just telling my mom that mothers are not allowed to be sick. It's against the law.

Anyway, today's weather has been beautiful after the first part of the morning when it was raining. I wish it was like this all year round. I can deal with low 70s any day!

Hurricanes of Another Sort

I'm sure you are very intimately familiar with the highs and lows in the stock market over the last year. I guess it's actually been about six months or so since things really starting turning towards the disaster zone. Well, I was reading the news online and read some very good news.

The stock market has been doing well over the last four days. It was said that that hasn't happened since this past April. WOW! That's a long lasting hurricane! I'm sure that one could really analyze all of this and say it has something to do with recent announcements on a new economic staff in the White House in the coming months, but it's probably also related to online trading and even holiday spirits. The market is such a volatile animal that once just never knows. I'm certainly no expert. LOL!

Is It What Goes Up Must Come Down?

Now that hurricane season is pretty much over, south Floridians are back to fretting about the lowering real estate values and loss of business jobs. As you know, adding to the hardships are loss of employment. I can tell you from experience that ever since hurricane Wilma hit South Florida a few years back, we have yet to recover financially. Things are slowly coming back to normal and I am finally seeing fewer and fewer blue tarps on roofs, but still, economically things are strapped to the hilt. I can't wait to see a turn around. I heard or read that we won't see improvement until at least the summer of 2009. Great! Just in time for the next hurricane season, LOL!

Well, I hope you are doing well and keeping your head above water. We will get out of this slump. Things eventually have to start going up again. In the meantime, enjoy the lowering gas prices and retail sales as long as they last, because with money, it's not what goes up must come down, but rather, what goes down will definitely go back up.

What Do You Do on Hurricane Down Time?

The last few days of hurricane season are fast coming to an end. What do you do on the down time? I'm sure you are less anxious about the weather and forget all about your hurricane fears, but have you thought about the idea of preparing for next year? Now is the time to get all of your plans together for the bigger projects like hurricane shutters and replacing your windows for high impact glass. Things like that are perfect projects for Hurricane Season down time.

Of course, you're probably also thinking about gaining and losing weight, especially now that holiday season is in full swing. Maybe you're even preparing for all of that eating by taking a few diet pills ahead of time. I don't know if that really works, but I guess anything is possible. I can't believe next week is Thanksgiving and then after that, the end of 2008. WOW! How time flies!

Consistent Cold Weather in the South

O.K. so what's going on with all of these days being in the 40s and 50s here in Sunny South Florida? What's up with all of this cold? I'm sure you must know that there have been a few cold fronts that have come through over the past few days, so that's what is up. You would think that with all of this cold weather, there can't be any reason to fear tropical storms or hurricanes even though technically we're still in Hurricane Season. Well, your thinking is right. I just checked the hurricane center website and there appear to be no new disturbances in the tropics. I'll update you if I hear of anything new.

No Named Storms to Report - Hurricane Tracking.

After the last blog I did on Paloma, I'm happy to share that there are no tropical cyclones reported in the Atlantic Sea Basin at this time. It was surprising to have to report such a powerful storm in the month of November as it was. The last time that happened, I read or heard on the news, it was around ten years ago. That really wasn't such a long time ago, but still things have been pretty crazy this year, haven't they. Three or four storms hit Cuba. It was like they were in the bacon of the month club for hurricanes.

Let's see. There was Ike, Gustav and Paloma. I guess there were three. I remember when Florida got hit with four storms a few years back -- was that in 2004? Anyway, hurricane season puts us all on alert, so when there are only 14 or 15 days left to the season, I'm a happy camper. Hurricane Season ends on November 30th. Remember though, that's not to say a hurricane can't strike any time of the year. It just means that they are more likely to develop during the warmer months of June through November.

Hurricanes and Environmental Changes

One of the worst aspects of hurricanes is their effect on the environment. They bring up all types of disease causing concerns such as mold. One of the things we dealt with during the restoration of our area after hurricane Wilma was sewage. Pumps were not operating because of lack of electricity. The city apparently didn't have backup generators to deal with the lack and this caused storm drains to bubble up sewage onto our streets and parking lots. It was gross.

Other environmental hazards could come up from things like asbestos. Exposure to asbestos can lead to serious cancers like mesothelioma. Life after a hurricane is sometimes more hazardous than during a hurricane. In fact, I'm sure you've heard that many times, the most deaths caused by a storm happen after the storm has already passed.

So, when planning your storm survival strategy, be sure to plan for environmental issues. Planning is the best way to be survive any type of disaster, especially when you live in a disaster prone area.

Diets and Hurricanes Don't Go Hand in Hand!

Diets and hurricanes don't go hand in hand. Why do I say that? In other countries, I am sure that this statement must be wrong, but here in the US, where things are readily available everywhere you look, you don't have to go far to satisfy your appetite when you are under stress. Many dieters are stress eaters...like me. The threat of a hurricane brings on strain and that makes me want to eat. However, I'd love to stay on my diet, but the food I need has to be refrigerated. What do I do? I go for canned foods that have lots of preservatives in them. Even if I do this for a week, seven days, it's crazy what that can do to a person who is on a diet. It throws there entire will power off.

By the way, talking about diets, if you are on one and you are considering diet pills, make sure you check out consumerpricewatch.net. This site was created to provide input to dieters interested in using the latest and greatest diet pills and diet supplements out there. For example, you can find information about CLA there. Paloma is Gone!

I've been on vacation for the last few weeks, so I haven't been able to write too much, but I'm sure you've heard of the last named storm, Paloma. She's gone now, but boy did she end up packing a pretty big punch as a Category 4 storm. Where did she even come from, right? Cuba has been hit pretty hard this year. It reminds me of the year that Florida got hit like four or five times back in 2004, was it?

Well, I read that Paloma caused major damage in Camaguey and also affected Tunas and Ciego de Avila. Ike and Gustav also hit Cuba hard this year making hundreds of thousands of Cuban citizens temporarily homeless. I can't wait until the end of November. I heard that the last named storm to make landfall in November happened around ten years ago.

I'm glad Florida hasn't been on the receiving end of any major storms this year. I don't think the economy could handle anymore heartache. On the other hand, I wouldn't wish a hurricane on anyone and my sympathy goes out to those who have felt the punch of a hurricane. It's no joke!

It's Time to Check the Weather!

It's time to check the National Hurricane Center report again. You know it's nice to know that there are no franchises out there that claim to know what the weather will be or not. We here in South Florida rely on the NHC to let us know what's coming. Even the big newscasters have to check with the hurricane center throughout the season.

Anyway, as you know, we are still a whole month away from the end of Hurricane season, so that's what I'm going to be doing every now and then until this new month comes to an end. That being said, I checked and HoorraaayyyY!!! There are no weather systems out there that are anticipated to turn into hurricanes or anything close.

Amazed by the Rain

I've been in South Florida for over three years now and I am still amazed at how much it can rain in October. For example, today, the clouds were threatening all day, but very little rain came down. On the other hand, this evening, it's been raining like crazy. I love love love rain! However, living in Connecticut was nothing like this. It's usually pretty dry at this point and winter temperatures are on the brink. So, if you had to choose between warm wet rain or cool dry air, what would you choose? I'm in favor of the rain.

There are no new reports for tropical systems according to the National Hurricane Center. The encouragement is to make sure you review your disaster plans in order to be ready in case the necessity arises. The weather in South Florida has been beautiful and that's what a lot of people have been focusing on. However, just keep in mind that while you are making plans to buy silk ties for your favorite man or toys for your children during the upcoming holiday season, you should still know what to do if a threat were to hit close to home. Disaster can strike any time. You don't need to have a hurricane barreling down on your home to require being prepared.

Visiting the North - A Different Kind of Weather.

I was thinking today that if I had not moved to Florida, I wouldn't have created a blog about hurricane preparedness. Either way, it is good to know what to do when preparing for a disaster, but being unaffected (for the most part) by hurricanes made me less interested in being prepared for a disaster. Living up north, I knew what it was like to live through a blizzard or an ice storm. I knew what to do to protect myself from slippery ice while driving. None of that has anything to do with hurricanes. Having a different perspective is eye opening.

I'm a New Auntie!

I'm a new auntie. My nephew is now less than two weeks old and I'm up here in Connecticut visiting him and, of course, my family. He is just adorable! He has the perfect little round head. My family is so blessed to have our new little addition to the family! So, my hubby and I bought all kinds of cute things for him and the family. At one point, we were thinking about getting them a stroller, but after reviewing their gift registry, we noticed that was already purchased, so we had to go a different route.

If I were to have gotten them a stroller, I'd love one of these - Bugaboo stroller. They look so user friendly, don't they? I've seen something like these at the baby stores. They are so lightweight and easy to work with. It's so true the way they are described as streamlined and versatile. What mother wouldn't want one?

But...I couldn't get them a stroller. Ho hummm.... :-)

Family Disaster Planning

Since there is little to discuss in terms of hurricanes, I thought it would be wise to take a little time out to bring your attention to some disaster planning tactics that the National Hurricane Center has suggested we take a look at. Please be sure to review their information below also found here:

Discuss the type of hazards that could affect your family. Know your home's vulnerability to storm surge, flooding and wind.

Locate a safe room or the safest areas in your home for each hurricane hazard. In certain circumstances the safest areas may not be your home but within your community.

Determine escape routes from your home and places to meet. These should be measured in tens of miles rather than hundreds of miles.

Have an out-of-state friend as a family contact, so all your family members have a single point of contact.

Make a plan now for what to do with your pets if you need to evacuate.

Post emergency telephone numbers by your phones and make sure your children know how and when to call 911.

Check your insurance coverage - flood damage is not usually covered by homeowners insurance.

Stock non-perishable emergency supplies and a Disaster Supply Kit.

Use a NOAA weather radio. Remember to replace its battery every 6 months, as you do with your smoke detectors.

Take First Aid, CPR and disaster preparedness classes.

The Atlantic is Free and Clear

The hurricane center is showing that the Atlantic Sea Basin is free and clear of hurricanes at this time. The Pacific cost is dealing with a Tropical Depression, but it doesn't look like it is headed anywhere near the States, so that is good news. We are almost at the end of hurricane season and I'm truly looking forward to some much needed cooler weather with no worries about my house blowing away. Aren't you?

Hurricane Tracking - Lots to Talk About!

Have you happened to look at the National Hurricane Center website lately? The weather map looks like it has a strange case of acne. There are two orange spots indicating tropical disturbances with a medium potential for organization into something more substantial. There is also Hurricane Norbert in the Pacific that has hit Mexico and another tropical storm in the Pacific named Odile that is headed west. Whew! And I thought things were going to start calming down now that we're in October. Oh Well! It just goes to show. You better keep your eyes open. Things may get worse before they get better.

Is it Really Getting Cooler?

Have you noticed the temperature change of late? Have you noticed all of the rain? If you haven't, then you have crawled under a rock and have refused to face reality. Yup! Fall is here and winter is definitely on its way. South Florida weather gets sweeter and sweeter the closer we get to December. I'm not talking about breaking out the electric blanket kind of weather. You might get that two or three days out of the whole winter. O.K. I could be exaggerating, but you might not get through your fingers and your toes if you were going to count the really winter days. Even so, I am looking forward to having six months free of hurricane worries. No! Hurricane season is not over yet. We still have the rest of October and all of November. Stay Alert, but enjoy the weather while you're at it.

Low Potential For Tropical Cyclone Formation - Atlantic

It would seem that we're now in the slowing down period in our 2008 Atlantic Hurricane Season. In fact, there is only one system with a low potential for growth coming out of the Yucatan Peninsula. No more are we in the power steering rack stage of hurricane season and thank God for that! So, does that mean that you should just sit back and relax now and forget about your preparation plans? I'd say, NO! Be sure you are always ready for natural disasters or unnatural ones for that matter. A disaster can always occur and the best way to handle one is by having a plan. Do you have one in place?

Sub-Tropical Storm Laura

How interesting to see that not only do we have to deal with tropical systems, but sub-tropical systems at this time of year. Hurricane seasons bring lots of "stuff" with them, don't they? Anyway, Laura currently has sustained winds of 60 mph. It's not expected to hit the US in any way and is, in fact, heading North at 14 mph.

Finally, we'll be in the month of October tomorrow, so hopefully, we'll be on the downward trend of hurricane activity. On the other hand, Hurricane Wilma formed on the Yucatan Peninsula on October 19th. Let's hope that all we have to worry about is baby bedding and not hurricane shutters!

I think the best thing to do would be to make sure we're prepared no matter what. That way, if something does churn up in the Atlantic or the Gulf, we'll be ready.

Reports of Low Pressure Systems and Strong Weather

Reports of Low Pressure Systems and strong weather have been coming strong for the last few days as we move slowly through the days of the 2008 hurricane season. Sometimes a person can get so hyped about hurricanes bringing damage, that when a no named system comes through, the concern is minimal to nil. However, the low pressure system that has been hitting Puerto Rico, Hispaniola and Haiti over the last week brought major flooding, landslides and deaths.

There is medium potential for the low pressure system near the Carolinas to strengthen, but the effects are being felt all along the coast.

Meanwhile, those folks who evacuated from Galvaston, TX have been allowed back in and what a mess they have found. Just to walk around it has been suggested that they be very careful with children. The potential for disease is great and especially for children who are more susceptible to a high bacteria environment, not to mention mold.

They're going to need those beautifeel MBT shoes to get around in that mess. Hopefully, they'll see what they have and decide if they want to rebuild. For now though, Galvaston is almost history.

How Do You Deal with Stress?

Now that we can focus on something other than the troubled tropics, have you read any good books lately? I'm always reading. I use to pride myself on reading all kinds of educational material and even cultured literature.

Lately though, with all the stress that life brings my way, when I read, I just want to escape. It's the best remedy for people who really like reading. Don't pick up something to read that's going to stress you out more. Find something that will take you away from it all.

As a side note, my prayers continue for the Texans who faced Ike head on and those who were affected by the storm. I hope each day gets better for you.

No News is Good News!

Isn't it so true that no news is good news when it comes to tracking hurricanes. My husband is ready to move out of hurricane country, but I have lived in Florida most of my life. I think I can take the heat. It's not like we're threatened more than once or twice a year by hurricanes.

He on the other hand is looking at hurricanes through invisible Nikon rifle scopes and is not looking back. I keep telling him he's watching too much t.v. and making more of hurricane season than he should, but he is not moved. He feels like he's living on the edge. Well, he is, I guess. We're not in the middle of the country, far away from earthquakes, tornadoes, hurricanes and the like. Oh well, let's see what the rest of this year brings. There's nothing to report today.

Hurricane Ike - Up and Out!

It's truly amazing to see nature in action and most specifically during a moment of disaster. Hurricanes, Tornadoes and Earthquakes bring destruction and devastation and there's really no where to go but away from the things you hold dear. That's what happened to many in the case of Ike over in Texas. It has been reported that 60% of the people in the strike zone decided to stay when they were given the option of evacuating.

Scary was not the only way to describe their experience, especially those close to Galvaston, TX. The screams and roars of the wind are nothing to sneeze at. It's one of the most horrible sounds one can hear especially when there is nowhere to go, especially when all you can do is wait until the loudness and the banging and the explosive sounds dissipate. It can go on for hours!

After the fact, it won't matter that you had one of those really cool Ladybug steam cleaners or your precious pictures. As one family put it, everything was destroyed. We stayed so we could protect our stuff and there's nothing left. My advice is to train yourself not to be too attached to your things. Your life is never worth the risk. You can start over. It's hard, but possible.

Gustav - What A Monster

Anyone who has been keeping track of Hurricane Gustav well knows what a monster it is. It has killed more than 80 people and has left a path of destruction in many parts of the Caribbean from Haiti to Jamaica and beyond into Cuba. However, now that it is in the Gulf of Mexico, where is it headed? Will it reach Louisiana as a monster storm? As of the 5AM advisory, the storm has weakened into a Cat3 storm. I hope it weakens even further before hitting land. It was absolutely horrendous to watch as Katrina barreled on shore three years ago. I don't want this storm to do the same to Louisiana or anywhere else for that matter.

Hannah on the other hand is now projected to steer Northward towards the US Coastline. This last projected model has it heading towards the Carolinas. That's actually the first time this projection has been made. Could it be correct? I was watching a Weather Channel program yesterday that spoke of Hugo and the destruction that storm caused to the Carolina area all along the coastline. I hear that the
Wilmington NC real estate area is just beautiful as well as South Carolinas Charleston area. I actually visited that part of the US a while back and it was so quaint and perfect. It would be unseemly for a hurricane to mar such perfection. Well, as we've been told, only time will give us the real path of Hannah. I do hope it will just dissipate!

Hurricanes and More - The Peak of the Season is Here!

Well, there is so much to talk about hurricanes since I've been gone. As you know, we went through Faye here in South Florida. That storm brought lots of rain and wind. It also hung around a little while too since it was moving pretty slowly. Overall though, if I could have my choice of which kind of storm I'd have, that would be the type.

Then there's Gustav. He's headed for the Gulf of Mexico and people are on alert over in Louisiana. I pray that somehow the storm weakens instead of strengthens. That area does not need another storm. Not NOW!

We're also looking at Hannah in the Atlantic. It's seriously headed towards the east coast of the states, but where it ends up, no one is certain yet. Most of the projections have it steering more towards the south to the Bahamas and Cuba. Hannah will be interesting to watch.

Finally, there are two other systems that are not yet named nor developed. The one furthest away seems to have the most potential for development, but it's just too soon to tell one way or the other.

So, need I mention that now is the time to prepare for any impending storms. Instead of getting that new fence installation done, be sure to have set up your hurricane shutters. Also, as storms get closer, it's time to have a plan on where you are going to be riding out any storms, where you will be storing patio, lawn and stoop furniture and whatever other outdoor accessories you have. There is no need to have your stuff flying into someone's window!

Walking, Exercise and Weather

I recently decided that I was going to start walking to pick up my son from school. One of the things I needed was a stroller. I had gotten rid of a stroller for my little girl a few months ago. Low and behold, there were two strollers near the dumpster in front of my house the other day and they were in perfectly good condition. One of them actually looked a lot like this $300 Chicco Cortina KeyFit 30 Travel System. Of course, I just needed one, so I left the other for someone else who might need one and kept the Chicco Cortina look alike.

I've used this stroller twice already and I'm extremely happy about it. I didn't have to pay a thing and it's actually better even than the one I threw out. Now all I need to think about is how to get past the weather situation. I guess that when it rains, I'll probably just drive. I'm really looking forward to this new walking routine. I'm going to start next week.

Have you noticed, though, that it has been raining every afternoon right around 2:00 pm? The dark clouds collect the moisture and then bust wide open! I love it, but it sure isn't conducive to my walking plans to pick up my son from school. Well, we'll see how it goes.

Summer Heat - A Constant in South Florida.

The heat we've been dealing with lately here in South Florida has been sweltering. It's been hard on everyone and especially those who don't live with air conditioning. My mother doesn't use her central air. I really don't know how she does it, but it's true. She loves the heat, or at least she can bear it. I sure can't. I love South Florida, but I'm not a big fan of extreme heat by any means.

People who need acne skin care must be going through a tough time. When I was younger I always had minor issues with my skin, but they happened usually more during the summer months than the winter/fall months. I guess it could also have been related to what I ate just as much as to the weather. Anyway, it goes without saying that summer heat is a constant in South Florida.

Today Sunny South Florida has turned into wet and soggy, but the rain is very welcome. In these parts, we've been having some scorching weather. I was at the Miami Sea Aquarium the other day and even though I was drinking lots of water, I was still feeling faint. I think I was over heating. WOW! That was scary. So, I hope you all out there are enjoying this weather as much as I am. It's cool and refreshing and I know the plants are loving it.

That being said, I wanted to share a quick thought about my old Linksys router. I have actually had three different routers, but the Linksys was the best by far. Now I've got this router that came with the DSL connection that I purchase monthly from my phone company. It gave me lots of problems until I finally had to get a whole new one. Finally, this new one is working great and I have not had any problems with it.

O.K. So that's that. I'll get back to more weather in my next post.

No Named Storms in the Atlantic

While Hurricane Hernan barrels through the Pacific, the Atlantic Coast is relatively clear at this time with no hurricanes to report. However, considering the level of activity for July, I heard in the news the other day that the forecast for this hurricane season is showing an possible increase in the expected named storms.

That being reported, I have continued to work room by room, drawer by drawer to rid my home of unused stuff and I have lots of it! I have actually filled several cardboard boxes with things I'm going to be giving away or throwing away in the coming weeks. It's a good idea to continue your "spring" cleaning. Clutter brings stress and one of the things we are urged to do is de-stress during hurricane season.

Plastic Vacuum Bags

Have you ever noticed how hurricane swirls look like flushing toilets? I know, that's silly to think, but here I am thinking about stuff to write on my blog and that's what I came up with. Well, there really is plenty to say about hurricanes and hurricane preparation.

For instance, have you ever thought about what to do with your very important papers? I bought those plastic vacuum bags that you can put all kinds of things in it and then vacuum the air out. I haven't done this yet, but I understand they are water proof. Make sure that whatever paper valuables you have, they are placed in water proof containers. I don't need to tell you how important that is and why.

Storms that May Affect the East Coast

There happen to be three apparent disturbances in the Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico today. One is said to have the makings of a possible future depression. However, an upper level low is said to be in the way of it becoming more disturbing to the east coast. So, there is plenty to pay attention to out there. Keep your eye out for more information on the one furthest away. I'm not sure where that one will end up, but it's good to be informed, right?

Anyway, talking about being informed, I happened to be at a Mary K party the other day and was talking to a few girls who were talking about the top rated acne products on the market. Two of the girls had acne issues. I'm happy to say that I don't have acne, but it seems to be a painful subject to talk about. Not only that, but it's hard to cure. I imagine diet has something to do with it and I guess genetics to some degree.

Well, that's a subject for my weight loss blog, so I'll leave it at that. Be sure to check out the weather channel if you're on the east coast.

Getting Local Tropical Systems Information

In the event you wonder where I get all of my local hurricane information, you can always check out this site here: http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/. This is THE source for up to date data on tropical systems, hurricane or otherwise. If your internet access is not readily available on a minutes notice and you need to know what's going on, you can certainly check your local news stations or, if you have satellite tv or cable, you can check the Weather Channel.

Onto other news, my cousin is getting married next month having been engaged for almost two years. I wanted to get her a gift and considered the all important "cash" gift, but have been leaning towards bridal lingerie. It's always popular. The thing is I'm not sure since I don't want to get her the wrong size, you know what I mean?

Anyway, back to the weather, it's been very humid, hot and heavy here in South Florida. Air conditioning is a must if you wish to survive with any level of sanity. My mom lives basically without it and I'm not sure how she does it! She's never been one for a.c. though. I guess it's just a matter of being acclimated.

Things are Churning Up For Hurricane Season

Woohooo...have you seen the weather channel lately. We've already gone through Hurricane Bertha which is way out there. Now there's Tropical Storm Cristobal, remnants of Hurricane Elida and Hurricane Fausto is burning its way through the Pacific burning it's Merrell shoes.

We're only part way through the 2008 Hurricane Season, so keep your eyes on the news and watch out for potential storms. Cristobal is forecasted to remain a Tropical Storm, but the east coast is not out of the woods yet. Anyone of you who live close to the east coast, west coast, the Gulf of Mexico...really, any coast, keep up with the news. Be prepared.

Bertha and Hurricane Plans.

At this point, I'm sure you are aware that Hurricane Bertha is no threat to the east coast of the US. At least, so far there are no indications that it should be a concern. I am very happy about that and I'm sure you are too. Well, now that Bertha's out of the way, if you want to continue making your Vegas vacations plan, go right ahead.

On the other hand, I'd like you to continue to think about disaster preparations. Please take some time to review your evacuation plans with your family and those living with you. I'd like to suggest one tip that you may not have thought of. Contact a family member or friend outside of your area who you can contact in an emergency. If any of the people living with you get lost, be sure that all know who to contact so that you all can get back together again after disaster strikes. Once you've made this plan, put it in action by doing several test runs. If you have young children, be sure to train them in the practice runs. Allow them to make the phone call. Be sure your friend/family member on the other end is prepared to be involved in the test run so that it can be as real as possible. Consider it a "fire drill" if you will. The fact is, even when we're not in hurricane season, disasters can strike. It's always good to be prepared.

If you haven't heard, tropical storm Bertha has strengthened into a hurricane, packing winds of 75 mph. At this time, it is not certain where Bertha will make land fall, but she is moving West, Northwest at 17 mph. Strengthening is expected over the next several days. Keep an eye on this hurricane ladies and gents.

Strong Tropical Wave - Hurricane Season 2008

Living in South Florida is absolutely delicious at this time of year. Tourism is just booming with visitors from all over the country - no - all over the world, who have searched for the best flight deals and are now here in the HOT tropics! It doesn't matter that a tropical wave is on its way. This is a big weekend for visitors.

Either way, it's good to update you on this latest weather disturbance to concern our area. What I read is that this wave is now changed in status to Tropical Storm Bertha. It's still far enough out to sea that it won't be an issue this fine weekend, but keep an eye on it.

I understand that we won't really know exactly where it is headed until at least four or five days passes, but for now, keep in mind that their is a high pressure system still in place that may prevent it from heading directly in South Florida's direction. At least that's what the weather report mentioned last evening.

Take Advantage of Small Business Opportunities

Have you noticed all the rain here in South Florida? My mom lives about 40 minutes south of me and I'm always asking her, "Are you getting any rain?" Her common answer is, "Well, I've seen it drizzle and there's been a little rain." or "None here. What about there?" Well, I'm usually saying..."It's rainin cats and dogs." Today and yesterday was just like that. I wonder if it has something to do with being so much further west of her.

Anyway, as for hurricane planning, I wanted to remind you who have small businesses, make sure you don't pass any small business opportunitites up where hurricane preparedness is concerned. Small businesses get breaks every now and again from the government when it comes to this (i.e. Sales Tax Breaks). Be sure to take advantage of them.

Don't put this important information in your pile of junk mail. Read it. It could mean your life.

Today was beautiful, bright and sunny. It was humid and that made it very warm, but you can't expect anything less for South Florida. You don't even need to be on a diet. You can just stay in the heat and let the sweat roll off of you. It's enough to take you off your diet pills and just watch the water weight dissipate.

As you can see my mind is focussed on dieting. Oh, I have a wonderful hurricane preparedness tip for you. If you only have portable phones that require batteries to operate, be sure to have a base line that does not need batteries, a corded phone, not a cordless phone. When the electricity shuts down because of a storm, you can feel secure that your land line will more than likely be working. This is a life saving tip.

Rainy Days are Here Again.

Rainy days are here again if you haven't noticed or don't live in South Florida. We've had some nice thunder storms and cool lightning. A tropical depression has been observed, but there seems to be no indication that this is going to develop into anything serious.

On that note, it can not be said enough that you should get your patios cleaned out before a storm. If you have any unsecured patio furniture, make a plan of action during an impending storm. Be sure to secure your motorcycles, used Harleys, bikes and other vehicles in a storage unit or research how to safely store them.

Again, having a plan of action is the best way to help yourself during a storm. It relieves anxiety and provides the needed focus to keep yourself and your family safe.

I was on another blog and just finished writing about the unemployment statistic hike that is hitting the nation. I thought it would be helpful to offer a few tips on finding a job. I'll share one big tip with you too. Living in Sough Florida, you can find the Employment Classifieds section in the Miami Herald, the Sun Sentinnel or any of your local newspapers. However, because we've been paying out the nose for gas these days, some might forgo that extra few cents it costs to buy the newspaper. Well, you can go to your local library or even a bookstore like Barnes & Nobles or Borders and gain access to the information that these papers have to offer.

On the other hand, you could just stick to your local library and ask for access to the internet. Go to Google or Yahoo or whatever, your favorite browser and type in your city and the word "jobs." Voila, you will see a host of links to websites offering what you are looking for.

You can even do that for resumes. Submitting resumes to job sites is becoming an old thing to do now. If you are looking for sites to submit your resume to, type in your city name and then the word "resumes." For example, if you live in Chicago, type in Chicago resumes. You will certainly find lots of job sites with employers looking for all levels of experience for the positions they seek to fill.

Coming Across Some Old Gold

As I am preparing, perpetually so, for hurricane season, one of the things I like to do is spring clean. It's now almost summer and I've got lots to do still. Yes, I am procrastinating a bit. However, one of the things I am happily coming across are some old gold pieces, chains, rings, things like that, that I haven't worn in a while. There haven't been any gold watches though.

I was at a community Yard Sale the other day and was approached by at least three people looking for old gold, broken stuff that could be melted down and reshaped. They promised to pay a pretty penny for it since they had no overhead and could afford to spend a little extra. It seems like an interesting home business.

Anyway, just thought I'd share a little bit about hurricane preparedness and spring cleaning and how they might go hand in hand.

Hurricane Season is HERE!

Well, we are a full week into the 2008 Hurricane Season and the first name on the Atlantic list has been used. However, did you know that NOAA predicts a normal to above normal season for the Atlantic? The last two years hurricane seasons were active, but the cooler waters kept most of the hurricanes far south of Florida or even kept them out in the Atlantic. I don't wish any level of hurricane on anyone, but mostly I don't want any to hit South Florida. As they say in spanish, "que asi sera." That means, may that be the case.

So, while I await more information on this hurricane season, let me mention a note or two about my diet. It's going horribly. I was thinking of buying a colon cleanser since I hear that some weight loss comes easier when your system is not blocked by toxins. However, I do have to curb my eating habits and make healthy eating and healthy living a part of my lifestyle.

Tomorrow is the first day of hurricane season. Sometimes one doesn't think about the possibilities of flying debris in a covered patio. Well, do not forget about anything outside of your home that can be picked up by a strong wind. If a hurricane threatens don't forget to remove all patio furniture, toys, exercise bikes. You may even want to be sure to tie down all plastic storage units. My mother had no idea that a strong wind would break her storage unit to pieces, but she had bought it in parts, so it didn't take long for the wind to break it back to pieces. Anyway, keep this in mind. I'm sure you'll be receiving all kinds of advice until the season is over. Read it. Don't put it aside.

I'm here watching the Great Debaters with Denzel Washington and so far, it's a great movie. Have you seen it? If not, make sure you do.

Now about this hurricane season. It's on the verge of starting. Are you prepared? All year long, actually, since last November, I've been asking you whether you have prepared for the next season. Have you? If not, get on the ball. This is not time to go buying those horse supplements or whatever other thing you spend your money on. You must prepare for the new Hurricane Season.

If you've never been through a hurricane, I mean actually experiencing the winds and the rains, the debris banging against your windows, the roofs lifting up off of your house or a tree you've seen standing for years simply fall on your property like it was a weed plucked out of the ground, you may not know what I'm ranting and raving about. On the other hand, no one on this earth can deny the power and destruction that Hurricane Katrina caused for New Orleans and Mississippi. I ask again, are you ready?

Rainy Weather's Here Again!

Hurricane Season is just one week or so away and finally, the rain has shown up again. We've had two glorious days of beautiful rain and I'm very happy for my little garden. They've been suffering through the hot Florida heat and so have I! I have been at the pool more times this May than I did last year at this time. I'm not complaining though. I do love the heat when air conditioning is just a few steps away and the pool or a beach are even closer.

By the way, I recently bought a memory foam pillow, I'm not really sure what they call it, but when you sleep on it, it's suppose to remember your shape and adjust to your needs. Well, until I really try it out, I don't want to buy the memory foam mattress that seems to be a hot ticket item for mattress buyers. Have you ever had a memory foam mattress? What's your take on it?

Anyway, back to Hurricane Season, wouldn't you know that my husband decided just this week that we should get hurricane shutters. I thought he was set on using those big wood boards, but now he seems to be changing his mind and wanted to spend a little more for our safety. I wish he would have thought about doing this back in January!

Myanmar - Maybe a Death Toll Near 100,000

I try to stay away from the details on stuff that tells about thousands being killed, like war stories and tsunami stories, but what happened in Myanmar! A devastating cyclone hitting people unawares seems like a story from 100 years ago. It is so sad and my heart goes out to all of you who have lost loved ones. Hurricanes, Cyclones, Tornadoes, Earthquakes...these weather situations are NO JOKE!

On a lighter note, changes to my diet have been causing me to develop a bit of acne. I don't usually have a problem with acne and don't think I need a serious acne treatment or anything, but maybe I could do something for this sudden breakout on my skin. I'm going to be out in the South Florida sun a lot more, so I'd like to look my best. What do you recommend?

Turning Hot Hot Hot!

I believe today is the first time in a while that we have reached 90 degrees here in South Florida. And, as an aside, did you hear on the radio that interview with the Mayor of North Lauderdale and the Mayor of Margate talking about an attempt to separate the State of Florida into two, sort of like a North and South Dakota/Carolina? Yup, they're actually talking about making South Florida a North Florida State and South Florida State. WOW! That's a big one!

No drug rehab needed to come up with that idea. Maybe I don't follow politics that much here in the South, so the idea is an extremely interesting one, don't you think?

Anyway, as the weather turns from warm to hot, be on the lookout for more brush fires and crazy weather. Hurricane Season is on the way!

Dieting and Pills

When I was younger, 15 years ago, I tried what were considered the best diet pills on the market, but those diet pills did nothing for me. In fact, when I think on it, I really didn't need to lose weight at the time. I was gorgeous. Now on the other hand, I have at least 15 to 30 more pounds that I could lose and I've been thinking about diet pills. I've seen them at Walmart and other stores. I've passed them by over and over again, but they seem to be calling out to me. Yeah, I know, that sounds weird, but it's true.

What I have decided to do though is join a gym for the millionth time. This gym is almost right down the street, so I'm hoping to take it seriously this time. After my family leaves, I will be sitting down to make a schedule so I can start using the exercise machines at the gym. I've been encouraged to join the aerobics, cycling and dance classes that are offered too, but I'm not sure if I'm ready for that.

Anyway, I know it's been all talk and no action, but I'll get it right. You'll see. Within a year, I'll be down at least another 15 pounds if not more. I'm working towards a goal. I'm trying to get it right this time. If I do it fast, I'm afraid it will all just jump back on along with more weight. Know what I mean?

Hurricane season starts many people preparing for the inevitable. They think of food, dry ice, backup batteries, hurricane shutters. You name it, they think about it and may actually start storing it as early as now. However, sometimes checking out your insurance policies might fall through the cracks, so here is a reminder.

Don't forget to check to be sure that all of your insurance policies are up to date and in good order. Make sure you understand what you are being covered for and where to send in a claim should you need to. This includes checking on your homeonwers policy, but also your health insurance and life insurance.

Spring Cleaning in Overdrive!

Have you ever wondered about how you accumulate the things you have in the house throughout the year? It's amazing how one can find little crevices and corners to place things in that they have purchased. I have new things that I have never opened. I have dresses and clothes that still have tags on them. It's not like I have lots of money or anything. I must shop for the moment. Spring cleaning can tell you a lot about yourself.

On the other hand, I have lots of tools, nails, screws and other such items that are very organized in their special spot. I love the way I have my DeWalt tools in one spot, my other machines in another spot and everything is exactly where it's supposed to be. I'm going to try to be more organized this coming year and I'm going to try to do less impulsive shopping. We simply have to ask ourselves..."Do I really need this?"

A Vacation after Vacation

I have been on vacation for a few days while the family came from the North. They seem to have brought the cold with them since now that they went back North, the weather here has substantially warmed up. I love Florida weather at this time of year. You almost can't get any better than this. I figure May will bring in the start of the rainy season, but now it's just beautiful!

I was looking at Corpus Christi, Texas North Padre Island rentals, just for the heck of it and it seems like they're experiencing the same weather temperatures that we are. My father recently did some work in Texas, thus the curiosity. I do a lot of that. I check out where I would visit in the world, if I had the money. There are so many places I'd like to go to - Paris and Tahiti being first and second on the list. What about you? Do you travel in your mind? LOL! I just saw a movie called Martian Child with John Cusack, so I'm that kind of mood.

Went to the Beach!

I went to the beach today for the first time in a while and, as usual, I can not complain about South Florida beaches. We've been doing lots of running around lately and it's been relatively cold, but today was finally a little warm and I couldn't pass up the opportunity to get my feet wet.

The water was freezing, but my in-laws had no trouble diving in. They live in the North and 70s is definitely beach weather for them. We were using one of the latest digital cameras out there. You know, the kind where you can actually shoot a video of the goings on. It was so cool. Ahhh, electronics have such a way of capturing the moment. I love technology!

Well, that's all for the latest weather. Don't forget to go to the beach as soon as you can. You will absolutely feel refreshed, rejuvenated and restored. I do.

South Florida is Cold!

Have you noticed the weather is a little on the cold side these days here in South Florida. I find the weather variations to be crazy, right? Well, the weather has been just delicious today. I was just thinking that the best acne treatment out there is good weather, healthy food and lots of water.

I'm amazed that here we are in the middle of April and it's cold. Yesterday and today we were in the 50s. What do you guys think of this weather?

I wonder what hurricane season is going to bring. It's almost upon us. Have you started stocking up yet?

Business and a Lightening Storm.

The other day I was thinking about how well things are going business wise and wondered what it would take to go out on the town and make a franchise. I know that's a big hop, skip and jump from a few small websites with less than 10,000 hits a month, but hey, you never know.

So what did you think about that video in the last post? It was crazy huh!Well, remember recently that I mentioned driving in an electrical storm on the way to my mother's house. I'll tell you, lightening ain't no joke! I just wanted to share another video I saw on YouTube the other day about lightening. In a Slump and Check This Video Out!

I know I'm not the only one who has felt like they're in a slump, but I have been so tired this past week. I think I just need some energy pills to get me out of this feeling. It's crazy.

Well, to keep you up to date on the South Florida weather, it has been very nice. One or two days during the week, we had some very heavy black clouds that came with lots of rain, thunder and lightening. I think we even had a tornado warning at one point, but nothing out of the ordinary for this time of year. The sun is still going strong and making it hot and humid, but not too bad.

By the way, I know you love hurricane video, but check out this video I just saw. I have never experienced hail this huge!

Homes that Withstand Hurricane Strength

I'm no expert on what can withstand a hurricane, but I've seen enough damage to know a few things. You don't want to be in a wood home if a category 3 hurricane is coming your way. However, concrete block style homes are more sturdy. You want to make sure to protect all windows with hurricane shutters or plywood slabs. If the wind gets into your home, I can assure you, it won't be pretty.

I was wondering about fiberglass columns though. You know how some homes have beautiful front patios with columns and the like. I wonder how fiberglass would withstand a storm. Florida has all of these hurricane codes that builders have to follow or else, but what about older homes? They just get grandfathered into approval even though they are absolutely not safe.

Your best bet is to just secure your home as best as possible, take your important papers, pictures and any other non-waterproof valuables and put them somewhere that is waterproof or take them with you and get out of dodge. Weather is Breezy and a Little Muggy

The weather here in South Florida has been pleasantly breezy and a little muggy, but not that annoying muggy that makes you sweat so you have to take a bath three times a day. It's perfectly nice, but sort of a warning that hot, sticky weather is on the horizon. I'm not sure I'm going to welcome that, but I really have no choice. Living in South Florida means living with the heat. Really though, how many people wished they lived in South Florida. So Many!

As far as other stuff, I'm still in the thick of things with the spring cleaning plans. I'm sure I have a few maternity dresses I could give away and lots of baby clothes. My children grow out of their clothes like every three months. I can hardly keep up. This applies to my son more than my daughter though as it seems her growth rate is a little more easy to handle when it comes to clothes.

April is Right Around the Corner

April is right around the corner. Can you believe it? It's amazing how we're already ending the first quarter of the year. I am sure you're mind is working on taxes and numbers and fiddling with all those deductions you are planning to take this year, but have you thought about hurricane supplies yet? Don't forget that June is almost here too. The weather in South Florida has been crazy, one or two days, super hot and then super cold. One of two days rainy all day and then beautiful and sunny. No wonder I have a cold.

On that note, I think I'll check out the wine gifts here to see if I can get myself something to warm up to. I just found out that this wine company who I ordered from online back in December is local. They are like twenty minutes from me. LOL! Anyway, after you've finished your income taxes, be sure to get your hurricane supplies in order. You'll be getting a few sales tax breaks coming up for hurricane supplies. I'll let you know when I hear of any.

New Additions to My Family

I have to share! I am so excited about some news I received this past week. My husband's brother and his wife (my in-laws) are going to have a baby. My brother and his wife are also having a baby and my sister just had a baby! WOW! Three newborns in one year. Can't beat that. Now all I need to do is get together my travel supplies and decide if I'm going to drive up to visit each child or if I'm going to fly. Oh, and I better get started with saving some money too. This is definitely going to be an expensive travel year. It's well worth it though. What a blessing!

Spring Cleaning Time is HERE!

The first day of spring was March 20th. Now that Spring Cleaning is finally here, one of the things I'd like to do is get a new mattress topper. I have this plastic that I usually put on the bed that is breaking from the stress of use over the past two years. I can't wait. My children sometimes fall asleep on my bed and without protection, there would be water stains where there shouldn't be any. That could be a bummer.

Another thing I am planning on doing before the end of spring is to get rid of the things I don't use or haven't used for the past year. There are so many of those things. What are your spring cleaning plans?

Beautiful Weather in South Florida

The Weather has been absolutely gorgeous here in South Florida. I have absolutely no cause to complain. We've had sunny days and cool days, a strange mix of short periods of rain (just to water the plants) with lots of sun and 70s and 80s. The other day it hit 89 on my temperature gauge. All in all, quite the lovely deal we Floridians have been getting living here.

To change the subject, I bought a few funny t-shirts at Wal-Mart the other day. There were these semi-sexy sayings that implied something about the top region of my chest. I didn't read them that way when I bought them, but my mother happened to point out their meanings and I was a little shocked at myself that I didn't see it the way she did. What can I say, I guess I'm still a little naive.

Anyway, back to weather...we're moving closer and closer to hurricane season. I wonder what this year is going to bring. Until next time.

Getting Old in the Florida Sun?

I've been out in the beautiful, hot hot hot, Florida sun all morning and I think I've gotten a little older because of it, not because time has passed, but because I forgot to put sunblock on and I'm sure I'm going to pay for that in the long run. Speaking of which...

Everyone is always looking for a way to stay young. I'd say that this search is as old as time itself. The fountain of youth has been the epitome of that search for generations. Do you think the search for youth is realistic in view of the fact that whether we put lots of cream on our faces or protect our skin with sunblock or drink lots of water, etc. etc., we still eventually end up old and wrinkled? I say it's nice to preserve our look for as long as possible, but the answer to staying young can only be found in the Bible. That's my humble opinion and I am sticking to it.

Now back to the weather... As I've been urging, it is very important to start thinking about your hurricane preparations way before a hurricane threatens your area. What have you done in light of this? Have you started collecting drinking water? Have you started replenishing your battery stock? O.K. if not, it's o.k. Just remember, you do have to eventually start getting your hurricane safety plans in order soon. April is right around the corner.

March Halfway Gone!

Can you believe that the first quarter of 2008 is almost gone! Daylight Savings Time has also come and gone too. After listening to some advertisements on the radio the other day, my husband asked me if advertisements for hurricane shutters and hurricane supplies and the like happens so soon every year. You see, he hasn't always been a South Floridian. He's been here through three hurricane seasons, one of which hit us hard (Hurricane Wilma).

On the other hand, I've lived in South Florida most of my life. Hurricane Supply advertisements are rampant at this time of year, especially when there are just a few months left before the actual hurricane season for 2008 starts. Why? Because now is the time when big ticket items need to be purchased. For example, it takes time, planning, measurements, etc. to make your hurricane shutters work for you. It would be better if you didn't start that type of planning after hurricane season starts.

Imagine how many other people have also waited until the last minute. Shutter companies are all booked up and can't get to your home until after the hurricane season is over. I don't think so! Better to start shopping around for hurricane supplies now while things are slow instead of getting that latest Rolex Submariner watch for when you go deep sea diving in the Keys.

Take my word for it! Planning is key to surviving the next hurricane season!

Being on a Diet!

I've been on a diet for about eight weeks now and I've lost about 14 pounds. I haven't tried top diet pills or gone to the latest fitness center. What I have done is watch what I eat.

I am telling you this on my hurricane tracking blog because I usually take out some time to share a little bit about myself. Being on a diet is rough. Some days are easier than others. I find the weekends the toughest since that's when I feel the laziest. I don't want to cook or clean or do all the things I usually do during the week. I just want to rest and eating comfort food does it for me every time. Well, enough about dieting.

Just a little note on the weather. I was on the highway the other day, headed towards North Miami Beach and what a storm! I saw lightening and heard crackling and booms! I heard heavy rain and could hardly see in front of me. I'm glad I'm not on the road and in a storm. Life is good!

Armor Screen

Have you heard of armor screen? If you have, is it something you use? I'm very interested in this since I don't currently have any window protection for my home. I mean, I have two huge sections of sliding glass doors to my patio would not be protected if a hurricane were to pass through here.

I would know to do the obvious things when it comes to my patio, bring in any loose objects, patio furniture and so forth, but the windows are still bare. Perhaps I'd put up plywood, but I was wondering about this product that I keep hearing about on the radio. So, if you've heard about this product, please let me know your thoughts.

Hurricane is Coming - Where Will You Go?

I have a question about fleeing from a hurricane that maybe you can answer for me. When a hurricane is on its way to your general vicinity, have you already planned where you are going ahead of time? Do you invest some time and even money in shopping around for a convenient hotel where you would have liked to visit, but you never had the time. However, since a hurricane is coming, this is a great time to go to that place or that hotel, for example hotels Las Vegas. Do you plan on visiting family or staying in other, more safe parts of the country or do you just wing it?

Just so you know, much of the stress of facing a hurricane can be eliminated if you plan ahead. You'll get some updates about this as the hurricane season gets closer, but mark my words, you will see information about how to have a less stressful time of it.

What Does Your Central AC do to the Air You Breath?

What does your central ac unit do to the air you breathe? Do you change the air filter at least once a month? Do you get maintenance performed on your air ducts? I'm good with changing air filters, but my air ducts haven't been cleaned in - I don't know how long. It's a fact that I could use some serious air cleaners.

My children's room no longer receives air conditioning. I'm sure it's because of the air ducts being backed up. In fact, since I moved here, the air has never reached that room and we have central air. Anyway, the reason I mention this is because allergy season is upon us. It's time to do some maintenance. Spring is just around the corner. Let's do what we have to do so we're not sneezing and coughing unnecessarily. Maintaining the air you breathe is as important as brushing your teeth. Do you think like that?

Rainy Days are Here Again!

Rainy days are here again is the title to this post, because although this should be the dry season in Florida, it hasn't been all that dry. Have you noticed that? My grass is still very green and my potted rose plant has gotten so much water over the past week or so that I had to prune it and move it to another spot in order for the poor thing to survive. It's looking better now, but there are no roses to speak of. Ho Humm!

I am so not complaining though. I love the rain and I love even more when it is accompanied by heavy black clouds, lots of lightening, thunder and a really sweet breeze. Just before a storm is about ready to burst forth, it gets so exciting that the energy in the air makes my pulse race enough to where I'm actually considering buying high risk life insurance. O.k. just kidding. I guess I am showing you how much I love the weather, so I'll just move on.

Really though, if you're considering the rain cycle in your spring cleaning plans, make sure you do your outside stuff now. It's going to get pretty rainy come May. Are you looking forward to it?

Spent the Entire Day Painting!

I spent an entire day with my husband painting the outside of my townhome. Don't you hate it when you are suppose to match the color of the paint you already have and, even though you think you bought the right color, it isn't the right one. That's what happened to me today. The color was just a smidgen off the color that already existed. The funny thing is that I was given the "right" color from the home owners association powers that be. Anyway, that's how I ended up painting my entire home instead of just a few areas that needed to be touched up. So now that it's all done, I'm beat!

I'd like to tell you about these great Amazon coupons that I found online, but I have no more energy! I'm completely spent. My right arm is numb from all the painting and I just can't say anything else that is more clever than "I'm already closing my eyes as I type." O.K. Bye!

Water Softeners - Mine Doesn't Work!

I purchased a water softener when I moved here about three years ago and let me tell you, it's suppose to make all your faucets look cleaner since there are no residual lime deposits, yada yada yada. Mine doesn't work. I remember when the salesman came in and told me that the area I live in is known to have higher than normal bacteria in the water and that I was going to need a water softener and a high-end water filter. That was so much baloney! Even so, my husband and I bought into the sales pitch and unfortunately, we're out several thousand dollars because of it. It's not one of my happiest experiences. I mean, I moved here when I was 31. That means I lived over 30 years without a water softener. Why did I need it so badly?????

Now I'm thinking about changing my whole faucet system altogether. Not because I have to mind you, but because I just want something different. That's the beauty of want vs. need, right? I was looking at these Moen faucets and, after I pay down my credit cards, I am definitely going to get one. Considering this blog post, I just want you to remember your wants are very different from your needs and especially in relation to a $4,000 water softner!

Spring Cleaning On the Rise

In thinking about spring, one of the things that always comes to mind for me is spring cleaning. In Florida, it's more than spring, it's just one season closer to hurricane season. So, when spring cleaning, you should also look at your hurricane supplies from last year. Make sure those batteries are not old and acidy and if they are, safely dispose of them. Make sure you've used up the water you purchased from last year and get some fresh water for this year. The bottom line is to go through and tidy up all of last year's supplies.

Another thing that comes to mind along with spring cleaning is repairs. It's a perfect time of the year to make those much needed home repairs. Why? The rainy season is not quite upon us and the outside of the house could surely use a fresh painting, the garden could be weeded out and new mulch put in and so forth. Inside the house, I can think of at least one or two big projects that I've held back from doing because of monetary issues, but I am looking forward to that tax rebate and possibly a tax refund, so I plan to work on those big projects in the coming year.

Speaking of which, I keep hearing about this company called directbuy from a radio talk show I listen to in the mornings. One of the things I heard that stands out is the fact that you can get many household needs resolved at a 50% discount. This is not an online store, but a members-only showroom and home design center that offers merchandise at manufacturer-direct prices. I'm not sure how to become a member just yet, but you can bet I'm going to be checking this place out. Just thought you should take a look too.

No Major Weather Systems to Report

There are no major weather systems to report after the past few days of rain. Yesterday was absolutely beautiful. It was so beautiful that I couldn't resist taking that walking to lose weight walk that I'm suppose to be doing everyday. Talking about losing weight. I've lost about 11 pounds and I'm so happy. Do I look like I've lost weight...Well, I have a lot of weight to lose, so the weight loss doesn't really show yet.

I was just telling myself today that I was going to do a colon cleanse so I can get some of the toxins I have exposed myself to out of my system. There's this tea my mom keeps telling me about that is called slimming tea or something like that. I used it once and within twelve hours, the tea seemed to be doing its thing! I don't think I can do that everyday, but once a week or even twice seems to be o.k. Anyway, that's all about weight loss. Hurricane season is just a few months away.

Health Insurance

I can tell you from experience that if you don't have health insurance, you are screwed! Well, let me clarify. If you live under the US Health System and you don't have health insurance or the medicare advantage, you can't even try to plan for all the eventualities that will come your way healthwise.

My husband and I are young, in our 30s, but he has a debilitating illness. He can work and makes a decent income, but he feels that where he is at at this time in his life is not where he would have been had he not had this illness. That could be very true, but more importantly, the freedom to search for the right position for him is almost not an option, because he needs health insurance. The security that health insurance provides to us as a family is tremendous. If he went out on a limb and/or transitioned into another company, he would have to wait until his probation period were over to get company benefits. That's the way of life here in the US. It's a bummer, but well...as I said, That's Life!

So, I just thought I'd share one of my plights in life. I am grateful for the little things. The children are healthy, I'm relatively healthy and my husband is stable. Thank God for the little things.

Taking Care of Business

Taking care of business, I have to bring up the fact that tax season is very much in our near future. If you haven't started getting all of your numbers in order, then this is the month to do that. Living in an area where issued insurance checks have been on the rise, it is important to note the tax ramifications of receiving money from your insurance company.

If your home has been damaged in a fire, hurricane, or some other kind of natural disaster, you may be entitled to assistance from the government, sometimes in the form of tax credits or tax allowances. I'm no expert, so don't quote me on any of this, but one thing is sure, when Hurricane Wilma hit and my family received insurance money to cover the damages that she caused, that money was received tax free and thankfully so.

Another thing to remember is donations. Charitable donations can be listed under your deductions if you are itemizing. Did you donate car or write a check to your church? Did you give away some clothes or other donations to the Good Will? If you can provide paperwork to support your claims, these deductions can help toward keeping more money in your pocket. Don't forget to check irs.gov for more on what you can do to get ready for tax season.

I Need a New Bank!

I am so tired of having to travel far away to get to my bank. At one point I had a really good account that paid a great interest rate, but I am no longer under that program since I don't have the money I use to have. Anyway, I am on the verge of making a firm decision to get a new checking account somewhere else.

The only things holding me back are lack of convenience in starting a new account at a bank closer to me and the fact that the old bank is offering a kick-butt interest rate on opening up a new savings account with them. I mean, I haven't heard about getting an interest rate like this anywhere.

Anyway, come to think of it, I think the gas mileage may make the good interest rate not enough of an incentive, not at this point. I guess if I was saving more money, it would be enough but I'm looking to simplify my life.

South Florida Winter

Has this been a beautiful winter in South Florida, or what? The past few mornings have been glorious. I've been walking in the mornings lately and I just love the cool, fresh air. I think my skin is even glowing a little with all the fresh oxygen I've been getting. Once the summer warmth starts to come around, I'm going to remember these days with fondness.

The evenings are just as beautiful. I have always loved the winters here and longed for them when I lived in Connecticut. Anyway, that's all I'm going to say about winter here. The hurricane season is quickly coming upon us, so come February, you're going to have to start thinking about hurricane plans again. Actually, you'll have a few more months of worry free time, but it's always a good thing to remember where you live and what's coming. For now, just think about those cufflinks you wanted to get your husband or, for you guys out there, those flowers and chocolate you wanted to give your special girl.

On Weight Gain and Loss

I've been looking at myself in the mirror a lot lately, especially with all these plans I have to lose weight. The sad thing is that I don't have the excuse of being pregnant anymore. I'm almost into plus size lingerie and underwear. I am so looking forward to seeing all this walking I've been doing pay off. You might notice over the next couple of posts that I'll be a little fixated on this topic. I'll try to curb the weight loss talk and have actually started a new weight loss blog for that purpose. Now I have another outlet for my compulsive weight loss thoughts. Let me go to that blog now.

Going Camping

I've been camping all of three times in my thirty something years and the experience was very cool. Not everyone is made for camping, but if you can deal with bathing using a sink and sleeping on an air mattress, what's not to love. The creepy crawlies come out and you are technically sleeping outdoors on the ground, but camping is an experience you shouldn't want to miss in your lifetime.

All that being said, I think I'll be planning a camping trip for my little family since my son will be out of school in the spring. I know he'll get a good kick out of sleeping under the starts. Maybe we'll even do it in our little back yard since it will be his first time. Now I need to get out that camping gear I had from my first marriage. I think I still have all of that stuff. Hmmm.....

Fluctuating Weather

It's suppose to be getting warmer here in Sunny South Florida, but have you noticed the weather fluctuating between the 60s and 70s for the last few days. I'd say it's weird, but maybe not. It's also been raining on and off for the last week or so. I'd say hold off on buying those swing sets for another couple of weeks. It's beautiful today though. I think I'll go ahead and take that walk I'm suppose to be doing since this is day four of my walking to lose weight diet.

Business Trips and Trade Shows

As you might know, I own my own business selling toys and collectibles. Several of my suppliers are participating in a few trade shows this year and have already invited me to visit their trade show booths. The exciting thing is that if I do decide to go to any one of these trade shows, I can just write most of it off as a business trip.

Last year I didn't even think to have that option since I was still a fledgling business, but this is my second full year in business and I'm looking forward to all the perks that come with that. Anyway, I just thought I'd share that with you. Considering the hurricane season is a little ways off, I figure I'll continue to keep things going with my everyday thoughts and ramblings. You may get a little more than a little of that for the next few months.

Bummed Out on Diet Strategy

I'm bummed out on my dieting. I had planned on starting this past Saturday and I even got my diet books, diet magazines and exercise equipment in order so that I could get myself motivated, but it's just not happening. Maybe I'm still on the lazy stroll out of the hectic December period. I've been trying to take it easy.

My father just left last Friday, so that's why I scheduled the start of my diet for Saturday, but as I said, it's just not happening. I'm feeling the need to indulge, indulge, indulge. This is terrible. Well, tomorrows a new day, so I'll be starting up again. What about you?

Diet Countdown - 2 more days!

I was looking at myself in the mirror the other day, actually today, and I'm afraid to weigh myself. I think I'm heavier than when I was 9 months pregnant for my second baby. On the other hand, I do have something to look forward to. I'll be starting my diet two days from now, not Friday, but Saturday. My mom and I decided that we'd be signing up for the Kmart Lose Weight contest. I don't know if that will help, but the motivation of being a contest member should. That means, no more chocolate in mass quantities, no more paella, no more Mickey Ds! Oh well, I believe I'm ready and if my reflection in the mirror had anything to say, I know I'd be hearing a mouth full!

Official Start Date of Diet

I'm officially one week away from starting my "New Year Resolution" diet and I'm siked! I've been told a number of things I could do to get a great head start, from colon cleanse to drinking lots of water to making sure to have a vitamin supplement. Of course, exercise goes without saying. I heard that Kmart is sponsoring an incentive contest for persons who are wishing to lose weight. It's like all the rave, isn't it? Have you noticed that America is becoming more weight conscious, or is it just me?

New Year Four Days In.

So now that we've officially crossed over to the New Year, what have you been up to? I've been trying to catch up from December's craziness. I've been making my plans to start my diet and have even talked about getting in touch with a real estate agent to see about moving. Now that I've talked about it though, I think my husband and I have decided to stay put for another year. We're anticipating a new Hurricane Season, although not looking forward to it. I guess that's just the way it is here with Floridians. Hurricanes are just a part of our life, or at least, anticipating hurricanes.

When surfing the web, do you have a popup blocker set up in your system? I know I do. Firefox has it's own popup blocker that works wonders! I didn't use to use Firefox and always had all kinds of junk come to my inbox because of it. I'm sure computers get viruses and worms and all kinds of things when these pop-ups do their thing. On top of that, the kinds of pop-ups are sometimes so inappropriate, have nothing to do with what you are searching for and may even be adult in content. Anyway, if you don't use a pop-up blocker, now is the time to get one!

Best Sellers of the New Year

What do you think will be the number one best seller at the start of the new year? I am not so interested that I would deign to investigate to any great degree, but I do like to speculate that it will be diet related. I mean, I'm sure a lot of people received treadmills for Christmas or are actually thinking seriously about buying one themselves come the new year. I also think that diet pills and diet books will be on the best seller list. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure that out. How about spandex and exercise clothes - Oh Yeah! So...what do you anticipate to be on the 2008 best seller list?

Attempt, if not Accomplish your Resolutions!

You won't believe this, but I have actually stopped wearing my gold chain because I feel that it draws too much attention to my double chin. It's a bummer, but I don't think I've ever had a double chin before. I don't remember having one when I was pregnant either.

So, on that note, I firmly resolve to strictly keep to my diet until the second chin is gone. It's going to be part of my spring cleaning goal. I have several events coming up next year that I want to be healthy enough to enjoy and that's what I'm going to do.

What are you resolved to do this new year? Do you appreciate having a fresh start? Some would say that every new day is a fresh start, but do you use it to attempt, if not accomplish your goals? That is what I am resolved to do!

After Hurricane Season

After hurricane season, what are some of the things you plan for? I think of vacations. I don't have much money to spend on them, but it's always nice to picture myself somewhere other than here.

Italy has always been a favorite place to visit. I've never been there, but the romance associated with it makes me want to go and see what all the talk is about at least once. So, how do you find the money to go to a place like Italy? I live in the US and have never even looked to see if I could afford a visit overseas, but perhaps it is affordable.

I have heard of contacting a travel agent to get the best rates. I have even seen companies on line that sell cheap tickets. Let's see, once I get there I could stay in one of those beautiful hotels in italy, or I could find hotels in rome near the Colisseum or the Trevi Fountain. How about staying the hotels in venice? That would be a perfect spot to be in if I want to ride in one of those gondolas. Finally, I could go to the hotels in milan and visit the Leonardo da Vinci Museum.

Whew! Just imagining it makes my head spin. Well, these are the things that fill my head when I'm not thinking about hurricanes. Isn't it lovely? :-)

I just came across the neatest memorabilia website! I know you can buy just about anything you want online, but this is cool. It's called MillionaireMemorabilia.com and features figures and scenes from your favorite movie, entertainment, music, celebrity, sports world and more.

What I found to be so cool about it is that MillionaireMemorabilia.com has stuff from the latest, most recent activities of celebs as well as some really old-time historical moments. For example, you could find Bono and Bruce Springsteen moments as well as scenes from The Godfather movies. You could find memorabilia from the Beetles and Justin Timberlake and even popular political figures of the past and the present. They have an eclectic mix that any memorabilia collector would love to have a part of. Many of their items are autographed too!

If I were to make an improvement on their website, I'd say to make their left sidebar links more clearly links. I wondered how to find all of their products without having to search. They have a whole list of what they sell and an easy navigation to their items, but it's a little confusing when the links are black. I almost didn't know to click on them.

If you have a real estate franchise here in South Florida, I don't feel sorry for you. Even with all the hurricane threats and hot weather, people still want to move to South Florida. Now, that's not to say that South Florida isn't feeling the crunch of the peak buying season being over. I think I see way more "for sale" signs than I did a couple of years ago. On the one hand, I'm sad about that because I see houses around me being bought for about what I purchased my home for two years ago. That means that my house is depreciating.

I hope it doesn't go down too much lower. So are you buying or selling your real estate this year? Now's the time to buy. Now's not the time to sell. That's one of the reasons my husband and I are not going anywhere anytime soon. We're going to deal with next year's hurricane season the way we did this year and last year.
